Près de deux millions d’enfants d’entre zéro et cinq ans seront vaccinés contre la poliomyélite entre le 19 et le 21 de ce mois de mai 2022. L’annonce est du responsable en province, du Programme élargi de vaccination (PEV) ce lundi 16 mai 2022.
Selon le docteur Stéphane Anse Batey, cette campagne de vaccination attend adopter une distribution porte-à-porte, aux travers les 34 zones de santé que compte la province du Nord-Kivu.
« J’appelle les parents à se préparer en conséquence et préparer leurs enfants en même temps, pour faciliter cette opération, car la quantité nécessaire du vaccin est déjà disponible en province ».
Il exhorte tous les citoyens, responsables des Églises, les Relais communautaires, les cadres de base, les médias, à s’approprier cette campagne qui s’inscrit dans le cadre de protéger les enfants.
Selon l’OMS , la poliomyélite est une maladie très contagieuse provoquée par un virus qui envahit le système nerveux et peut entraîner une paralysie totale en quelques heures. Le virus se propage d’une personne à une autre principalement par la voie fécale-orale ou moins fréquemment par le biais d’un véhicule commun (eau ou aliments contaminés, par exemple) et se multiplie dans l’intestin. 
La fièvre, l’asthénie, les céphalées, les vomissements, la raideur de la nuque et les douleurs dans les membres en sont les premiers symptômes.
Une paralysie irréversible (des jambes en général) survient dans un cas sur 200. Entre 5 et 10% des malades paralysés décèdent lorsque leurs muscles respiratoires cessent de fonctionner.
